On the importance of data reliability

Posted on July 20, 2021

Measuring is good, making data reliable is even better.

At the heart of the building energy management system is energy data: these millions of customer data (invoices, index readings, temperatures, weather data, etc.). All are collected to be integrated into our digital platform.

The challenge for our teams? Transform this abundance of raw data into reliable energy data:

  • make them readable, therefore homogeneous (based on the same unit or reference period)
  • make them complete therefore without data gaps or billing anomalies

Once reliable, this data can be used to set action plans and targets for reducing energy consumption in our clients' buildings.

How does this work in practice?

To use consumption data, Sobre Energie relies on 4 main sources:

  • supplier invoices
  • real consumption data from our IoT sensors in buildings
  • statements transmitted by energy distributors, Enedis for electricity and GRDF for gas
  • the index statements provided by the technical managers.

Our customers' monthly invoices are first checked for completeness, then integrated into our digital platform. At the same time, our data analysts check the consistency of this billing data with distributor data.

At Enedis, the collection of data from meters is often automatic, every week for load curves, then an aggregation is carried out monthly for comparison with supplier data.

For GRDF gas meters, users often have to manually enter index data. Which can generate human errors.

But our data analysts ensure

For example, at one of our clients, the reliability of the data returned to our platform was exemplary: based on 3 test sites over the whole of 2020, we noted only 0.3% of discrepancy between our data and those coming from GRDF.
