Energy efficiency of educational buildings

Posted on June 25, 2021

50% of the local authority stock is made up of schools, middle schools and high schools (source Education Nationale).

Often old and very energy-intensive buildings , schools remain the most energy-consuming type of building, ahead of sports facilities and socio-cultural buildings.

Focusing efforts on this park is therefore a significant source of energy savings. An essential passage to comply with the tertiary decree , obligatory for all tertiary buildings of more than 1000m2:

  • -40% final energy consumption by 2030
  • -50% in 2040
  • -60% by 2050

To find out more about the calendar and the issues of the tertiary decree, we explain everything here.

Less spending on heating or lighting educational buildings means more money better spent elsewhere. And set an example for local authorities, by raising awareness and educating young people about the challenges of the energy transition.

An energy efficiency approach that goes through several stages in which Sobre Energie is at your side:

1st step , out an energy audit .

This allows you to know the condition of your buildings (surface area, level of consumption according to uses, obsolescence of buildings, etc.). To know which direction to take, you must first know where you are starting from. And where we stand in relation to national requirements. Sobre Energie is here to support you in this audit phase with our data managers.

Discover our energy management platform.

The digital inventory of your assets on our platform allows you to identify the most energy-intensive buildings. You can therefore compare them against similar buildings.

Financial aid exists:

  • As part of the government's recovery plan, €4 billion is allocated to the energy renovation of the public tertiary sector, including an envelope of €300 million for high schools in particular.
  • The ACTEE 2 program (actions by local authorities for energy efficiency) finances several calls for projects. In particular the “Merisier” call for expressions of interest , dedicated to the energy renovation of schools. The application deadline is June 18.
  • For its part, the Banque des Territoires supervises the Action Cœur de Ville program. Its objective is to support the improvement of the energy efficiency of 1000 schools located in medium-sized municipalities. The Banque des Territoires has a specific Eduprêt loan, for the modernization of educational buildings.
